  new work studio
Finally, I have been kicked off
the dining room table and even
out of the apartment to a new
studio on a lower floor.  It's
  a dream-come-true to have a
"a room of my own" -
  Virginia Wolff lives!

  It's a mess already - but  Im
  in heaven...

   2008
   Springtime in Sicily

  March Spring break was
    spent on this rocky
isle off the southern coast of
    Italy. It's layered in
    thousands of years of
    historical ruins. Mt.
    Etna was rumbling, mumbling
to itself the day we visited -
    something our guide said
    wasn't too common. The lava
    on the surrounding hills is
    dated by the lichen growth;
light grey flows are the oldest
and the black flows are the
    most recent. A multitude of
    gray hues cascades down the
    mountainside.

   The food was delicious; we
   especially liked the vegetables
and the ways in which they were
   cooked. Other favorites: lots a
   delicious olive oil, also sage
   leaves and onion slices, lightly
   batter-dipped & fried

in olive oil, served with a glass of wine.
Pumpkin, fried, then marinated in garlic,
   vinegar and sugar. Yum.

I looked for signs of hand knitting
everywhere, but our guide said that
it's not widely practiced anymore and
seldom for sale in this contemporary
world of ours. (Italy has been
   inundated with inexpensive Chinese
goods as well). However, the stunning

mosaics at the Roman Villa de
Casale a bit inland on the south
   coast revealed what could possibly
be   ancient socks. The photo above
shows what could be red leather
sandal straps tied to a blue leather
heel - but the light blue/grey
underneath sure looks like a pair of
   hand knitted socks to me!

Wartime knitting
is a story I researched for years...in Vogue Knitting's upcoming Ultimate Sock Book, there's a brief excerpt from a work I hope to someday have published in its entirety - as well as photos of a half dozen or so items, the very tip of my personal collection...

Top-Down Classes In the few spare available - I am sliding in Top-Down instruction at
various Guilds in our part of the Connecticut woods...the project?...knitters start with a teddy pulli and
depending on how fast they knit, they can cast on for a teddy cardi as well...Grrrrrr...how's your teddy faring
       on the fashion front?
